3/13 Volunteer Opportunity: AALAM at Ricesticks and Tea
Location: Arlington Street Church, Arlington and Boylston Streets (basement level; enter at side entrance), Boston, MA
Date: Saturday, March 13, 2010
Time: 7:30AM to 9:30AM
RSVP: Vince Lau (vlau@flynnclark.com) by March 5

Started in 1998, Ricesticks and Tea ("RST") is a monthly food pantry program which serves the needs of pre-screened low-income, non- or limited-English speaking Asian immigrants by providing culturally appropriate food and linguistically appropriate services. Food items distributed include a mix of food obtained from the Greater Boston Food Bank and Asian food staples purchased at a Chinatown grocery store (e.g., jasmine rice, cooking oil, dried red beans, bean curd, and Asian noodles). Families rely on RST to supplement their own food purchases.

Each month, volunteers sort through food items and prepare and distribute bags of groceries for up to 120 families, representing over 300 children, adults and elderly. Various AALAM members have been individually volunteering on their own throughout the years, and former AALAM president Rebecca Lee received the 2009 AALAM Community Service Award at the Dow Dinner for her efforts in coordinating RST. This month we are inviting members to participate as a group. If you cannot attend, please consider making a contribution, as the food pantry program is entirely volunteer-run and funds are needed to cover the cost of the Asian groceries.

Contributions can be mailed to: Ricesticks and Tea/AACA, Box 120861, Boston, MA 02111.

Since RST has no overhead expenses, all of your dollars will go directly to buying food.
