As we enter 2001, AALAM's newly established Social Committee will host its first event on February 1 (see below). The Committee hopes that this and other events will provide an opportunity for AALAM members and prospective members to make new acquaintances and contacts, and to renew old ones, in a relaxing setting.
With the establishment late last year of the Community Service and Social Committees, as well as the AALAM website, 2001 promises to be another year of growth and expansion for AALAM. Consider playing a more active role in AALAM by running for a position as an officer or director. Nominations are now being accepted for the AALAM elections this spring (see below).

AALAM Seeks Nominations for Upcoming Elections AALAM will hold its annual elections in late March/early April 2001 for the following positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and members of the Board of Directors (10 positions). First-time candidates are strongly encouraged to seek a position this year. All members in good standing are eligible to serve in these positions. For more information on these positions, contact AALAM President Perry Wu at 617-526-6141 or any other AALAM officer or director (listed at www.aalam.org). Nominations, including self-nominations, should be sent by e-mail to aalamass@hotmail.org. Please state the office sought and provide a short biography of the candidate. Candidates will have the opportunity to submit a short written statement describing their background and interest in the position sought, to be sent to the electorate. More details to follow.
AALAM Winds Up Successful Food Drive The AALAM Holiday Food Drive ended up collecting numerous boxes and bags of food and over $1,500 in monetary donations for the benefit of "Ricesticks and Tea," a local Asian food pantry for low-income elderly and battered immigrant families. Thanks to all who contributed to or assisted in this effort, including the APALSAs at Boston College Law School, Harvard Law School, and Northeastern University School of Law.
AALAM Endorses Jack Lu for District Court Judgeship At the January 2001 meeting of the AALAM Executive Board, AALAM's officers and directors met with and endorsed the candidacy of AALAM member John T. Lu, a Lowell attorney, for a position as Associate Justice in the District Court Department of the Trial Court. Jack is a solo practitioner specializing in criminal defense, a former attorney with the Committee for Public Counsel Services, and a member of the Board of Directors of Merrimack Valley Legal Services, among other organizations.
AALAM Seeks Anecdotes Regarding Court Interpreter Services In recent weeks, AALAM has joined the Boston Bar Association's Court Interpreter Services Task Force and the Administrative Office of the Trial Court's Court Interpreter Coalition in their pursuit of adequate state funding for interpreter services in the Commonwealth's courts. Climenko/Thayer Lecturer on Law, Harvard Law School The First Year Lawyering Program of Harvard Law School is seeking attorneys to teach legal research and writing as Climenko/Thayer Lecturers on Law. The Lecturers will collaborate in the design and teaching of two sections of approximately 40 students in a year-long First Year Lawyering course. They will also participate in the training and coordination of upper-level student assistants and collaborate with library staff on legal research training. The position may also include developing case files and related materials for the upper class Ames Moot Court program. Requirements: J.D. and two years of experience. Prior experience teaching law or legal writing or working in law school clinics or administration is desirable. Knowledge of information technology relevant to legal training is also desirable. Salary: $53-57,000. Contracts for three years are contemplated. Appointments will commence July 1, 2001.
