NAPALC Releases 1999 Audit of Anti-Asian Violence
The National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium (NAPALC), a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization dedicated to advancing and protecting the civil rights of Asian Pacific Americans nationwide, has released its annual Audit of Anti-Asian Violence, reporting on hate crime incidents against Asian Pacific Americans in 1999. The Audit reported that there were 486 documented incidents against Asian Pacific Americans, an increase of 57 from the 429 incidents reported in 1998. The incidents included brutal murders of four persons of Asian descent. The Audit also found that national news media have failed adequately to cover hate crimes affecting Asian Pacific Americans; consequently, the Audit includes narratives from family members and friends of victims on the impact of hate crimes on their lives and communities. For more information about the Audit, contact NAPALC at 202-296-2300 or visit www.napalc.org.
