AALAM Membership Meeting This month's gathering will feature guest speaker Angelo Ancheta, currently the Director of Legal and Advocacy Programs at The Civil Rights Project at Harvard University and formerly the Executive Director of the Asian Law Caucus in San Francisco. Come hear Angelo speak about immigration and its impact on Asian American political participation. Following the meeting, snacks and refreshments will be served. In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to meet the candidates for AALAM's 2001-2002 officer and director positions. Save the Date: NAPABA Northeast Regional Conference After last year's successful NAPABA Northeast Regional Conference in Boston, this year=s event will take place in New York City on Saturday, May 5, 2001. AALAM Member Confirmed for Associate Justice Position on Boston Municipal Court Congratulations to AALAM member John T. Lu, a Lowell attorney, whose nomination for an Associate Justice position on the Boston Municipal Court was unanimously confirmed by the Governor's Council during the week of March 26, 2001. Jack's candidacy was endorsed by AALAM this past January. Jack is a solo practitioner specializing in criminal defense, a former attorney with the Committee for Public Counsel Services, and a member of the Board of Directors of Merrimack Valley Legal Services. When he is sworn in, Jack will become just the third Asian American judge in the history of the Commonwealth.
AALAM Awards Scholarship On March 8, 2001, AALAM hosted its annual Mentor/Mentee and Scholarship Reception at Bingham Dana LLP. Despite the blizzard that shut down the State for a couple of days prior to the reception, both AALAM members and local law students showed up in full force to meet their mentees and mentors, respectively, as well as to congratulate this year's $2,000 AALAM Scholarship recipient, Tackey Chan. Tackey has been devoted throughout his life to serving the Quincy community through such organizations and efforts as the Quincy Asian American Association, the Asian American Resource Workshop, the Asian Pacific American Agenda Coalition, the Atlantic Neighborhood Association, Kids Vote Quincy, the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence's Silk Road Gala Committee, Work, Inc., and the Governor's Asian American Commission. Tackey has been working for the last six years as an aide and advisor to State Senator Michael W. Morrissey. Moreover, he is presently enrolled in the evening program at New England School of Law. As he accepted his Scholarship, Tackey emphasized that any level, amount, or method in which each of us can get involved in our communities is valuable and needed, and he challenged each of us to get involved Ð starting now. Senator Morrissey also spoke of Tackey's devotion and commitment to the Quincy community and commended AALAM for awarding Tackey this year's Scholarship.
AARW Seeks SafetyNet Volunteers The Asian American Resource Workshop (AARW) is seeking volunteers to assist with revitalizing its SafetyNet program, which provides education about anti-Asian violence and works to prevent hate crimes. SafetyNet needs immediate help with reviewing and revising training materials and updating resource and referral lists for a hate crimes training it plans to conduct in the fall. AALAM Alumni News Jonathan D. Lee, a former AALAM member and director, has joined the Private Client Group of Merrill Lynch & Co. as a Financial Consultant in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was formerly with KPMG, LLP in Minneapolis and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue in Boston.
Jonathan Bruno, a former AALAM member and director, is now an attorney with Kaufman, Borgeest & Ryan in New York City.

Office of the Attorney General, Business & Labor Protection Bureau, Insurance and Unemployment Fraud Division This position involves the investigation and prosecution of complex insurance and unemployment fraud cases. Cases will include workers compensation fraud, unemployment tax and compensation fraud cases, motor vehicle fraud cases, and fake injury or property loss cases committed by claimants, employers, medical providers, and attorneys. Office of the Attorney General, Business & Labor Protection Bureau, Fair Labor and Business Practices Division Primary Duties: Assistant Attorney General will be responsible for the enforcement of the Massachusetts labor standards, including statutes that address non-payment of wages, overtime, minimum wage, child labor, workplace safety and public construction prevailing wages. The AAG is responsible for handling the prosecution of violations in criminal, civil and administrative proceedings, as well as making public presentations to employers and employees concerning the wage and hour laws. Local Cable TV Show Seeks Asian American Attorneys as Guest Speakers Malden Cable TV broadcasts AAsian Spectrum, a show aimed at Asian American audiences in Greater Boston. The producers have invited AALAM members to appear on the show. Suggested topics include employment law, estate planning, Medicaid issues, long-term insurance planning, small claims, and small business problems. A translator is available during taping. It is very informal and a great opportunity to reach out to the Asian American community. Children and Family Law Program (CAFL) of the Committee for Public Counsel Services CAFL is seeking qualified attorneys for its trial panel to receive appointments from the juvenile and probate courts to represent indigent parents and children in state intervention/child welfare matters, including care and protection proceedings, children in need of services cases, and termination of parental rights cases.
