May 2000 was a momentous month for AALAM, as it hosted the 2000 NAPABA Northeast Regional Conference and the AALAM Fifteenth Anniversary Banquet. On May 6, attorneys, judges, and law students from Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania gathered at Hale and Dorr LLP for a day-long conference featuring keynote speakers Yvonne Y. Lee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and William F. Lee, Managing Partner of Hale and Dorr LLP; panel discussions centering on the theme, Charting A Course: Challenges and Opportunities in the New Millennium; and a roundtable discussion in which attendees strategized on ways to promote the advancement of Asian American attorneys in all areas of the legal profession. At the Fifteenth Anniversary Banquet, Justice Fernande R.V. Duffly of the Massachusetts Appeals Court delivered the keynote address as the first Asian American justice in the history of the Appeals Court.
In June, the new AALAM Executive Board begins planning another exciting year of AALAM programs. AALAM is seeking members to serve on the Law Student Outreach / Scholarship Committee and the Communications Committee (see below). The first event will be a Summer Associate Lunch Reception on Wednesday, July 12, 2000 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at Hale and Dorr LLP, 60 State Street (26th Floor). Please join us for lunch to welcome Asian American summer associates to Boston and to network with other Asian American attorneys in Boston (see below).

International Association of Korean Lawyers to Hold Conference in New York
The International Association of Korean Lawyers (IAKL) will hold its 2000 Annual Conference July 28-29, 2000 at the Hotel Intercontinental in New York City. The conference, hosted by the Korean-American Lawyers' Association of Greater New York (KALAGNY), will feature a keynote presentation by Harold H. Koh, Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights, Democracy and Labor, a mock jury trial, and two days of panel discussions on various subjects, for which MCLE credit will be offered. AALAM Committees Seek Members
AALAM is seeking interested members to join its Law Student Outreach / Scholarship Committee and its Communications Committee. The Law Student Outreach / Scholarship Committee oversees programs designed to assist law students, including the administration of the AALAM Scholarship, the AALAM mentorship program, and other new initiatives. The Communications Committee is responsible for production of the newsletter and will focus its efforts on developing electronic means of disseminating information to AALAM members, including establishment of an e-mail distribution network and an AALAM website. AALAM Members Run for Boston Bar Association Council
The Boston Bar Association's annual elections are ongoing, and AALAM Immediate Past President Rebecca A. Lee, a partner at Goodwin, Procter & Hoar, is a candidate for the BBA Council. AALAM member John H. Chu, managing partner of Chu, Ring & Hazel, is also a candidate for the Council. If you are a BBA member, you should have received a ballot in the mail. Please take the time to fill out your ballot, support the AALAM members running for office, and show that AALAM members are active, voting members of the BBA. Ballots are due by July 1, 2000.
NAPABA Law Foundation Seeks Scholarship Applications
The NAPABA Law Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2000 NAPABA Law Foundation Scholarships. The Foundation is a non-profit, tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization established by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). Each fall at the NAPABA Annual Convention, the Foundation awards scholarships to law students who demonstrate a commitment to serve or contribute to the Asian Pacific American community as future leaders. In 1999, the Foundation awarded a total of over $11,500 to four deserving law students. Applications and criteria are available at http://www.napaba.org/scholar.html. Asian American Policy Review Seeks Articles
The Asian American Policy Review is currently accepting submissions for its Tenth Volume, to be published in March 2001. The Review is a non-partisan academic journal, published annually by graduate students at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. It provides a national forum for addressing issues that concern Asian Pacific Americans and is a unique resource for practitioners, policymakers, and politicians. Selection Criteria: Among the principles followed in selecting papers for publication are: timeliness of the topic to current policy discussions; originality and thoroughness of research and ideas; cohesiveness, sophistication, and consistency of arguments; contribution to scholarship and policymaking; style, tone, and coherence of language; overall effectiveness.
Guidelines for Submission: (1) Articles must be original and unpublished; (2) commentaries should be 2000-3000 words; research articles should be 4000-7000 words; (3) a Microsoft Word disc copy and 5 hard copies of the manuscript, an abstract, brief biography, and the author's address and telephone number must be submitted; (4) citations must follow the Chicago Manual of Style; (5) send submissions to Asian American Policy Review, JFK School of Government, 79 John F. Connecticut Asian Pacific American Bar Association Established

AALAM Member to Serve on U.S. Court of Appeals Advisory Committee
AALAM Member William F. Lee, the managing partner of Hale and Dorr LLP, has been selected to serve a three-year term on the advisory committee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The committee will advise the court on ways to improve the administration of justice. It consists of 15 active members of the bar of the court who are selected by the chief judge.

Attorney/Adviser, Harvard Law School, Office of Public Interest Advising (OPIA):
OPIA is seeking a part-time (14 hours/week) Attorney Adviser/Program Coordinator. OPIA is Harvard Law School's career services office for students and alumni/ae interested in pursuing jobs in the public interest and public sector. The Attorney/Adviser will be responsible for advising students and alumni/ae about diverse practice settings, job searches, and career decisionmaking. S/he will edit resumes and conduct mock interviews; coordinate the Wasserstein Fellows Program which brings outstanding public interest lawyers to campus for 1-2 days to advise students; develop and run OPIA's programming, including organizing and speaking at panels; assist in managing the Alumni/ae Summer Fellowship program. Qualifications: J.D. degree; experience as a public interest lawyer; personal qualities which will make the applicant an effective counselor; ability to multi-task and organize programs. Legal Editor, National Consumer Law Center (NCLC):
The NCLC is seeking a Legal Editor. NCLC is a nonprofit legal center specializing in consumer and energy law. It provides legal and technical support to neighborhood legal services attorneys and other advocates for low and moderate income persons nationwide. It publishes a multi-volume series of legal manuals and publications. Responsibilities: The Legal Editor will assist on all aspects of the production of the legal manuals, including overseeing all appendices, document compilation and preparation, copy editing, proofreading, and development of electronic media, such as CD ROMs. Qualifications: Detail-oriented, organized individual, capable of handling multiple tasks. Prefer experience in copy editing and proofing and excellent wordprocessing, computer, written, and verbal skills. Must have at least one year of experience, technical or legal editing preferred. Salary: Low $30's, plus generous health, dental, and other benefits, including 4 weeks vacation. Hearing Committee Member, Board of Bar Overseers:
The Board of Bar Overseers is seeking attorneys and non-attorneys to serve a three-year term as a Hearing Committee member in Suffolk, Essex, or Middlesex county. The Hearing Committees sit as a factfinding tribunal in disciplinary proceedings brought by the Office of Bar Counsel against individual attorneys. The Committees take evidence, make adjudicatory rulings, and prepare a written report and recommendation for the Board's consideration. Members serve on a volunteer basis and receive no monetary compensation. Assistant Attorney General, Office of the Attorney General, Economic Crimes Division:
The Office of the Attorney General of Massachusetts is seeking an Assistant Attorney General to serve in the Economic Crimes Division. Duties: Investigating and prosecuting private sector white collar criminal offenses including consumer fraud, securities fraud, major tax evasion, and fraud involving fiduciaries preying upon vulnerable. Additional functions may include conducting joint investigations with other referral agencies or prosecutorial organizations, such as District Attorneys and/or the U.S. Department of Justice. Qualifications: 3-5 years of litigation experience, including jury trial experience; (2) Superior Court experience, preferably in the area of complex white collar; (3) familiarity with Criminal Rules of Procedure applicable to Massachusetts superior and district court prosecutions; (4) prior prosecution or criminal defense experience also preferred. 2000 NAPIL Equal Justice Fellowship:
The National Association of Public Interest Law (NAPIL) is seeking applications from experienced attorneys, recent law graduates, and third year law students for a two year NAPIL Equal Justice Fellowship to work with an innovative mental health advocacy project in Boston to provide effective legal representation to low-income parents with mental who are at risk of losing contact with and custody of their children.
