AALAM General Meeting
The next AALAM General Meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 28, 2000, at 6:00 pm at Hale and Dorr LLP, 60 State Street, 26th Floor, Boston. The agenda will include an opportunity to meet with Paul M. Yee, a Boston-based attorney seeking an appointment as a judge of the Boston Municipal Court, and consideration of his request for AALAM's endorsement of his candidacy. The meeting will be followed by a dinner with members of the Boston University APALSA (see below). AALAM Dinner with Boston University APALSA
Following the General Meeting, all AALAM members are warmly invited to join the members of the Boston University Asian Pacific American Law Students Association for a dinner sponsored by the BU APALSA. The dinner will take place on November 28, 2000 at 8:00 pm at New Lei Jing Restaurant, 20 Hudson Street (between Beach and Kneeland Streets), Boston Chinatown. Meeting of Executive Boards of Massachusetts Minority Bar Associations
AALAM's Executive Board will meet with the Boards of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association, the Massachusetts Black Women Attorneys, and the Massachusetts Association of Hispanic Attorneys on Wednesday, November 8, 2000, at 5:30 pm at the offices of the Boston Bar Association, 16 Beacon Street, Boston. This will be an opportunity for the boards to become acquainted with one another and to identify issues of common concern. Be on the lookout for future membership events between and among the organizations.

Harry H. Dow Memorial Legal Assistance Fund Fifteenth Annual Celebration
The Harry H. Dow Memorial Legal Assistance Fund, which provides funding for the provision of legal resources to Asian Americans, will hold its annual banquet on Friday, December 8, 2000, at 6:00 pm at Chau Chow City Restaurant, 83 Essex Street, Boston Chinatown. National Conference of Community and Justice Walk-A-Thon
NCCJ is sponsoring its Second Annual Walk As One: Unite to Fight Hate 5 mile walk-a-thon through Chinatown, the South End, and Bay Village to celebrate Boston's diversity and take a stand against bias, bigotry, and racism. AALAM Launches Website
AALAM now has a website to provide members and prospective members with general information about AALAM, information on how to become an AALAM member, current listings of events, information on AALAM committees, back issues of the newsletter, professional opportunities, and more. To check it out, visit www.aalam.org. Special thanks to AALAM Director Eunice Kim Chapon for leading the effort to launch the website.

AALAM Announces New E-Mail Address
AALAM now has an e-mail address to which members can send questions, comments, updated contact information, or any other correspondence. The e-mail address will also be used to send e-mail updates, reminders of events, and other announcements to members. If you have not yet provided your e-mail address to AALAM, please send it to us. AALAM's new e-mail address is aalamass@hotmail.com. Special thanks to AALAM Vice President Elaine Tung for setting up the e-mail account.

AALAM Sponsors Holiday Food Drive
The AALAM Community Service Committee is seeking your help for our Holiday Food Drive in November and December. The Community Service Committee is working with "Ricesticks and Tea," a local Asian food pantry for low-income elderly and battered immigrant families. We will be asking AALAM members to donate appropriate food items, money, and/or time to help bag and distribute donations on Saturday, December 16, 2000. Specific details will follow in the December newsletter. If you would like to help, please contact AALAM Director Mytrang Nguyen at 617-994-6106 or mnguyen@anf-cbo.state.ma.us. We are in immediate need of "drop-off sites" for the non-perishable food donations. If your law firm or agency is willing to serve as a drop-off site (we can provide you with a small bin in which to collect the items), please call Mytrang as soon as possible.

The next meeting of the Community Service Committee will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2000, from 5:45 to 7:15 pm at Meehan, Boyle & Cohen, P.C., Two Center Plaza, Suite 600, Boston. The meeting will feature an update on the Holiday Food Drive as well as a discussion of potential long-term community service projects. If you are interested in joining the Committee, please call AALAM Director Sherry Yee Mulloy at 617-523-8300.

AALAM Committees Seek Members
As discussed at the AALAM General Meeting on October 24, AALAM continues to seek interested members to join in planning activities and managing the organization in the coming year. Specifically, AALAM is seeking members to assist in planning professional development events, social events, and community service activities, as well as members to assist in managing membership information, producing the newsletter, and maintaining the website. The Legal Assistance Corporation of Central Massachusetts (LACCM), a non-profit program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly clients in the Worcester County area, seeks a staff attorney to represent individuals in government benefits matters, such as SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, food stamps, unemployment compensation, and related matters. Qualifications: Admission to Mass. Bar; fluency in Spanish or Vietnamese is helpful. Salary: $28,000-$52,000, including benefits. Application: Send resumes to Robert A. Attorney, Massachusetts Department of Public Health
The Office of the General Counsel of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is seeking an attorney to advise the Department on implementation and enforcement of managed care reform legislation. Minimum five yearsŐ experience required. Experience with managed care and insurance issues strongly preferred. Counsel, Massachusetts Division of Insurance, Hearing and Appeals Department
The Division of Insurance is seeking an attorney for its Hearing and Appeals Department, which evaluates and makes determinations in contested proceedings relating to health-related cases. Duties include managing the administrative hearing process, performing legal and evidentiary analysis and review, writing and issuing interim orders and final decisions, advising the Commissioner of Insurance, and drafting regulations. Qualifications: One year of practice of law. Preferred Qualifications: Five yearsŐ litigation experience; strong background in statistics, mathematics, economics, or finance; experience in health insurance. Attorney, Mental Health Legal Advisors Committee of the SJC
MHLAC, which seeks to provide quality representation for indigent persons involved with the mental health system, is seeking an experienced attorney to represent children and parents with mental illness in civil matters and to supervise other attorneys providing legal representation to parents with mental illness. The attorney also advocates for systemic reform through legislative lobbying and commenting on agency regulations and policies and serves as a liaison to advocacy and consumer groups. Travel is required. Qualifications: Four yearsŐ experience in law; membership in the Massachusetts Bar; experience in disability law, family law, mental health issues preferred. Executive Director, Massachusetts Correctional Legal Services
MCLS, a nonprofit legal services corporation devoted to protecting the legal rights of Massachusetts prisoners, is seeking an Executive Director who will lead the organization by supervising staff, developing and implementing programs, fundraising, and maintaining relationships with other prisonersŐ rights and legal services organizations. Preferred Qualifications: Substantive knowledge of prisonersŐ rights law, significant trial and appellate experience, strong management and communication skills. Training: Guidance for Providing Services to Limited English Proficient Persons
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights, is hosting a session to provide information on Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the new HHS policy guidance on the prohibition against national origin discrimination as it affects persons with limited English proficiency. Come learn how the new guidelines will assist health and social service providers in ensuring that persons with limited English skills can effectively access critical health and social services. The session will take place at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, 600 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, on Wednesday, November 15, 2000, from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.
